Definition of Indirect Labor

In this article we only deal with Indirect Labor. For Direct Labor clik HERE.

For production companies, the classification of the Workforce is decisive for all calculations of Manufacturing, Human or Financial Management.

Most of the time the Workforce is classified into two categories:
1. la Direct Labor (DL),
2. la Indirect Labor (ME).

Indirect labor encompasses all operations that are not directly proportional or frequency to the volume of production.
The ME can still be broken down as below:

Manufacturing forklifts
  • Truck unloads.
  • Supplying workshops with material or semi-finished products from a supplier UPA or a store, either at the edge of the line or in a buffer stock in the workshop.
  • Internal handling in the workshop.
  • Warehousing, internal handling of raw materials, work in progress and finished product stores.
  • The evacuation of finished products to the Finished Products store or directly into the trucks as the case may be.

Logistics forklift drivers are not included in this scope.

Adjusters, manufacturing assistants or “technical leaders”
  • Initial conditioning, small maintenance interventions
  • Manufacturing change (exchange of tools, robot program, material composition, etc.)
  • Monitoring of machine peripherals (regulation system, automatic material supply system, etc.)

As a general rule, adjusters, pilots or assistants perform tasks whose complexity prevents them from being delegated to unauthorized operators.

Workshop technicians
  • Carrying out improvement work in collaboration with production methods
  • Animation of manufacturing performance improvement groups (SMED, TRS, etc.)
Manufacturing personnel responsible for the routine maintenance of a tool
  • Maintenance or upkeep work.
  • Cleaning of manufacturing areas
Manufacturing inspectors or retouchers
  • Staff continuously assigned to carry out control operations outside the production flow. These are irregular operations that cannot be timed
  • Staff permanently assigned to performing touch-up operations outside of the production flow.
The structure (also called Framing)
