Create a production time catalogue

Published by Pascal QUETIN on

The main purpose of a time catalogue is to allow a company to calculate the manufacturing time of a product in advance.
Sometimes the response time to an estimate can be very short. The result does not arrive magically. It is necessary to draw quickly on the knowledge and the history of the company.

To do this, all companies must have a reliable time catalogue at their disposal. This working tool :

  • must be organised with a maximum of information and preparation.
  • becomes over the years the collection of the company’s know-how.
  • requires structuring the information so that it can be easily retrieved and reliable results can be easily obtained.

Below is an example of information flow between “elementary time” (or micro time) and the range catalogue.

Time data

Estimates are often made by analogy. It is this last catalogue (ranges) that constitutes the real final database of the company’s know-how.
Adjustments according to the order or product variant will be calculated using the other catalogues (Elementary times and Blocks).

If the company does not have a time catalogue, or simply wants to reorganise it, it is important to ask yourself a number of questions before you start. For example:

  • How should the catalogue be structured?
  • Which tool should be used to share the catalogue?
  • Who will be the users of this catalogue?
  • How will this document be shared?
  • What information will be included in the catalogue?
  • Are we talking about 1 catalogue or an information base that will integrate the times?
  • How will the catalogue live over the years?
  • Who will be in charge of the evolutions?
  • In which language (if the company is international)?
  • etc…
